I can almost see it, that dream I'm dreamin', but there's a voice inside my head sayin' you'll never reach it
Back towards the end of November I had a fortune cookie fortune that said, “An important word of advice may come from a child”. Now something many people don’t know about me and might find rather strange is how much credence I have in fortune cookie fortunes. I received this particular fortune just days before Jennifer and Marissa came to keep Charlie while David and I were away on our trip. Now the fortune was not brought to fruition until after our trip was over, when we returned home. It was the morning after our trip, and Jennifer and Marissa were preparing to go home. Marissa had her MP3 player and began to sing along with Miley Cyrus’s “The Climb”. I had never listened to the song before, but as Marissa sang and I listened to the lyrics, I began to get a little emotional. Mostly because I feel like Marissa is so smart and so talented that if she reaches for her dreams, she has a bright future ahead of her. However, as I reflect, I realize that it could also be applicable to my own life. Most of my life, I have avoided doing so many things that I wanted to do just because I was so afraid of failure. In my mind, if I don’t try, I can’t fail. The real problem with that logic is that although I may not fail, I also never allow myself the chance to succeed. So, being inspired by a fortune cookie, a Miley Cyrus song, and a five-year old, I know that Marissa is not the only one with a bright future. I am only 28 years old, and I hope that I live the next 28 years much more fully and productively. Sometimes inspiration can come from somewhere where you least expect it.
